SAILING

An island shaped by wind and will

At the outermost edge of the archipelago, where the open waters of the Baltic Sea meet the last of the rocks, Sandhamn has for centuries been a place where the sea sets the terms.

Sandhamn’s history does not begin with pleasure boats and regattas — it begins with the pilots. As early as the 1600s, the pilot service was established on the island, and the men who knew the waterways by heart guided merchant ships safely past shoals and skerries toward Stockholm. The pilot station remains one of Sandhamn’s most distinctive buildings and a living testament to an island life defined by responsibility, precision and a deep respect for the sea.

It didn’t take long before the island’s reputation reached wealthy Stockholmers. In the latter half of the 19th century, Sandhamn had become the undisputed summer paradise of the capital’s bourgeoisie. Hotels and villas sprang up, and with them a sailing culture that would shape Swedish archipelago life as a whole. Sandhamn’s unique blend of old pilot craft, bohemian summer spirit and elite sailing is a cultural crossroads that exists almost nowhere else in the world.

1620s

The pilot service is established on Sandhamn. The island becomes the most important navigation point for vessels heading toward Stockholm.

1830

KSSS — the Royal Swedish Yacht Club — is founded and chooses Sandhamn as its natural home harbour.

1870–1900

The golden age of the seaside resort. Summer visitors flock to the island, hotels fill up and the first sailing competitions take shape.

1937

Gotland Runt is sailed for the first time. What begins as an adventure for a handful of sailors grows into one of the world’s most coveted offshore regattas.

Today

Sandhamn is a living centre of Nordic sailing — with roots deep in the traditions of the pilots and eyes fixed on the horizon.

KSSS - The Royal Swedish Yacht Club

The Royal Swedish Yacht Club — founded in 1830 — is one of the world’s oldest and most respected sailing clubs, and Sandhamn is its eternal home.

Since 1830, KSSS has shaped Swedish sailing life. The clubhouse on Sandhamn is not just a building — it is a temple for all who love the sea and the challenge of taming the wind. With members from across the Nordic countries, KSSS organises a broad range of competitions, from junior sailing programmes to world-class offshore regattas.

Gotland Runt

Since 1937, Gotland Runt has brought together hundreds of boats and thousands of sailors every summer for one of offshore sailing’s greatest adventures. The 320-nautical-mile course around Gotland is a test of endurance, tactics and seamanship — and the start from Sandhamn is one of the most electric moments of the Swedish sailing summer.

The Sandhamn Regattas

Throughout the summer, Sandhamn’s waters are defined by regattas of every kind — from archipelago cruiser classes to the fastest racing boats. The Sandhamn Regattas attract sailors of all levels and transform the harbour waters into a stage of white sails, tactical manoeuvres and cheers at the finish line. Whether you’re competing or simply standing on the quay watching, it’s impossible not to be swept up in it.

The Sailing School

On Lökholmen, a short tender ride from Sandhamn, the KSSS island transforms into something entirely its own each summer. Seven sailing camps are held from the end of the school year in June through to the start of term in August — in total, 450 children and young people spend some of their best summer days out here. The camps are aimed at children and teenagers between 11 and 15, regardless of experience, and each camp runs for six days. A typical day begins with reveille and the raising of the flag at the flagpole, followed by breakfast and sailing in all weather — in beginner, intermediate or racing groups. In the evenings, the fun takes over, with activities that nobody quite knows what they involve until they’ve begun. It’s the kind of place people talk about for a long time afterwards. The camps are popular and tend to fill up quickly — registration opens in autumn for the coming season.

Sandhamns Vänner runs its own sailing school for children aged 7 to 12, held during weeks 27–31 (29 June–31 July). The school is based at Skärkarlshamn — a sheltered bay with a gently sloping sandy beach and protection from most winds, ideal for beginners. The morning session runs from 09:00 to 12:00 and is aimed at younger children with no prior experience. The afternoon session, 13:00 to 16:00, suits children with a little more time on the water and introduces the basics of racing rules. Three to four instructors are present throughout the day, with a focus as much on community and joy as on technique, and every session goes ahead regardless of weather. Children must be at least 7 years old and able to swim 200 metres.

The Harbour

Just outside the doors of Sandhamn Seglarhotell lies one of Stockholm archipelago’s most active guest harbours. KSSS manages all the harbours and, together with Lökholmen and Telegrafholmen, offers moorings for over 400 boats — open from the last weekend of April to the last weekend of October. The harbour staff, easily recognised in their red jackets and blue polo shirts, are on hand to welcome and assist arriving sailors, and during peak season the KSSS tender vessel patrols outside the harbour to guide boats to the right berth.

For those who prefer to trade the lively harbour atmosphere for something quieter, M/S Häftig — known as Baljan, and now electrically powered — runs between Sandhamn and Lökholmen every hour from 09:00 to 22:00 during peak season, with late-night departures on Fridays and Saturdays at 00:00 and 02:00. On Lökholmen, 200 guest berths await in calmer waters, with a sauna and showers adjacent to the harbour.

During regatta weeks, not least Gotland Runt, the harbour outside the hotel becomes something altogether special — hundreds of boats, thousands of sailors and an atmosphere that’s hard to put into words if you haven’t experienced it yourself.

A classic archipelago dream

Step aboard a classic wooden boat and let the waters around Sandhamn take care of the rest. A full or half day at sea, with an experienced KSSS crew and a pace set by the wind — and nothing else.

Would you like to anchor in a quiet natural harbour for a swim, a picnic and a few hours in the sun? Or let the sails carry you between islets and skerries, where the archipelago reveals itself at its most beautiful — open, grand and free?

The pace is unhurried, the atmosphere personal and attentive. The experience is tailored entirely to what you’re longing for — stillness, conversation, adventure, or simply the pleasure of being together on a gently rocking deck beneath an open sky. The trip is perfect for one or two couples looking for a day on the water with time for presence and enjoyment.

The boat is also a popular choice for the perfect marriage proposal, a romantic sunset cruise — or as a setting for photography and campaigns, thanks to its classic aesthetic and the archipelago landscape that provides a timeless backdrop.

Available to book during peak season, May to August.
