Just east of Sandhamn, about four and a half nautical miles across open sea, lies Grönskär – the mythical little island often referred to as the Queen of the Baltic Sea. Here, rugged granite cliffs, salty sea air, and a rare sense of stillness come together. The island embodies the character of the outer archipelago: softly weathered rocks, low-growing vegetation clinging to the wind, and a light that shifts from crystal clear to dramatic in just minutes. It is one of the archipelago’s most magnificent settings, perfect for a day trip filled with nature, sea, and calm.
At the heart of the island rises Grönskär Lighthouse, built in 1770 – a powerful landmark that has guided seafarers through the outer Baltic for more than two centuries. We hold the key to the lighthouse, allowing our guests to climb to the top of the tower and experience a view that truly broadens perspective: mile after mile of open water, cliffs, and sky. Seabirds often glide across the sea surface, and with a bit of luck, a seal may appear among the rocks below.
Grönskär also bears traces of a living fishing heritage that has existed here for generations. In one of the island’s natural harbours, a small fishing hut remains as a quiet reminder of a time when fishermen sought shelter, smoked the day’s catch, and rested directly on the rocks.
Next to the lighthouse stands the former lighthouse keeper’s residence, where we offer accommodation for up to ten guests. There is no running water and limited mobile coverage, but that is precisely what makes the stay so special – a chance to slow down, listen, and be fully immersed in nature. In the evenings, when the wind settles and the horizon turns shades of pink, it feels as if the entire island is holding its breath.
During summer, we offer boat trips from Sandhamn to Grönskär. The journey is short, yet the feeling is like stepping into another world. Once ashore, you’ll find cliffs for swimming, paths to wander, and places that invite you to linger longer than planned.
Grönskär is both raw and beautiful – one of the archipelago’s true treasures, and a place where both body and mind can truly come to rest.

During the summer season, we offer excursions to Grönskär, one of the archipelago’s most fascinating islands and a place that few people have the opportunity to truly experience. Thanks to our close connection to the island, we have access to the lighthouse, the former lighthouse keeper’s residence, and the small museum that tells the story of life on Grönskär throughout history. This makes each visit unique for our guests.
When the boat arrives at the natural harbour, you step straight into a landscape of granite cliffs, salty sea air, and tranquil nature. Here, you can wander freely, swim from the rocks, and explore the environments where lighthouse keepers and fishermen once lived. In the museum, you gain insight into Grönskär’s history, maritime life, fishing traditions, and the people who worked here for centuries.
The lighthouse keeper’s residence that we manage accommodates up to ten guests, making it possible to arrange overnight stays for small groups. With the key to the lighthouse, our guests can also climb the tower and experience the iconic views that have made Grönskär so renowned – with open water, rugged cliffs, and vast skies stretching in every direction.
Grönskär is a place of stillness. A place to slow down, sit on a rock for a while, listen to the wind, and feel how the sea and the horizon help both body and mind find rest. Out here, far from the noise of everyday life, the pace naturally softens, and each visit becomes a gentle reminder of how simple calm can be.
